Wollersheim Winery Growing Season Has Golden Finish (Sept. 2009)

2009 Vintage Could Rank Among the Winery's Best Years

Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin – A blanket of fog stretched across Wollersheim Winery’s vineyard Tuesday, September 15 as their annual grape harvest got underway. Throughout the growing season, Winemaker Philippe Coquard kept close watch on the grapes and determined the time was finally right to pick.

Like most crops, weather plays a crucial role in when to harvest, as well as what is harvested. A cool spring, followed by a record-breaking cold, gray summer left Coquard wondering if the crop would ever ripen. It wasn’t until mid-August when the sun and heat arrived that things began to turn around. In fact, Coquard is delighted with the end result. “This is the best I’ve ever seen. Our crop has both quantity and quality, which is a rare situation,” shares Coquard. “The extended period of warm, extremely dry weather these past four weeks was golden for us. It allowed needed ripening to happen.” While not hurtful to the grape crop, the dry weather did accelerate the need to harvest precisely when they did to relieve the vines of any unnecessary stress.

With a few fields left to pick, Coquard anticipates Wollersheim’s 2009 estate-grown Wisconsin crop will total nearly 150 tons of fruit. Though it is still too early to tell, he feels confident this year’s crop may rank among one of the winery’s top three vintages. The deep color, flavor concentration, and intensity of the fruit is high with the sweetness running at an optimal 20 to 22 brix.

The legacy of the 2009 vintage can be tasted once the wines become available over the next year and a half. The first taste of the 2009 harvest, Wollersheim Ruby Nouveau 2009, is released on November 19. Other estate wines such as the Prairie Sunburst Red, Prairie Blush, Eagle White, Domaine du Sac, and Domaine Reserve, will be released during 2010. The 2009 wine vintage is one to watch (and to taste).
