Wollersheim Mini Prairie Fumé - Unbreakable Good Taste.

Wollersheim Winery Celebrates 20 Years of Prairie Fumé (June 2009)
Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin – Celebrating 20 years since its creation, Prairie Fumé is the wine of honor at Wollersheim Winery’s upcoming Prairie Fumé Picnic Days, June 20th & 21st. The idea for Prairie Fumé, Wollersheim’s most popular wine, was born in the fall of 1988 when Winemaker Philippe Coquard with his wife Julie and 4-month old daughter Celine were dining out in Madison. While enjoying a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, described by Philippe as “fresh, fruity, light, so pleasant…” it hit him that they needed to make such a style of wine. It was winemaking season, and Philippe quickly studied and tried a new method of winemaking in the next few days; stopping the fermentation before completion so that some natural sweetness from the grapes remained. This produced a fresh and fruity easy to enjoy wine, just what Philippe was looking for. In the spring of 1989, Prairie Fumé was bottled, introduced and released. So well received, it sold out in no time. It quickly gained national recognition earning four gold medals in wine competition right out the gate. Additional exposure was received from Midwest newspapers and as Bob Wollersheim would say, it was the beginning of the “Prairie Fumé phenomenon.”
That phenomenon has been going on for twenty years, and this year’s Picnic Days is the perfect place to celebrate this 20th anniversary with a picnic at the winery. Families of all ages are invited to kick off the summer at the winery. Running from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 20th & 21st, Prairie Fumé Picnic Days offers wine tasting, live music, and a closer look at the making of Prairie Fumé. Besides their family, guests should bring a picnic lunch, picnic blanket or chairs, and possibly an umbrella for rain or sun! (Event is Rain or Shine.) The Winery will have wine, other beverages, and a selection of snack items to purchase. Guests are asked to not bring grills or carry-in beverages and to leave pets at home.
Along with the Prairie Fumé, Wollersheim will feature their newly released Prairie Sunburst Red and Prairie Blush all perfect for picnics. Visitors can taste these and other Wollersheim wines inside the winery or buy a glass or bottle to enjoy with their picnic.
An outside self-guided “scavenger hunt” will take the place of regular winery tours during this event. The “hunt” offers a fun way to explore the winery on the outside, plus a chance to win a Prairie Fumé Picnic Basket. Additional family adventure includes cork craft projects for kids to create, along with an open grass area to throw a Frisbee or ball, plus wine-related games to purchase in the Winery Store.
Located 25 miles northwest of Madison, Wollersheim Winery’s Prairie Fumé Picnic Days is open to the public. From Madison, take Hwy 12 west to north on Hwy 188. For further event details, view the winery's June/July 2009 newsletter.
